My Business Journey: Chapter 7: The pivot - Finding my Niche

Welcome back to my journey! Last month, I shared the secret to building and retaining my wonderful client base. As the years rolled by, my clientele thankfully grew and grew, but despite loving my work, I reached a stage where I craved a new challenge to keep my wellbeing business more relevant.

In 2016, I chose to evolve by training in Permanent Cosmetics (tattooing brows, eyeliner, and lip colour). This field was experiencing a revolution, offering subtle, natural results, and I knew many of my loyal Tonbridge clients would benefit from these life-changing procedures. It was a massive financial investment—five days of intense training by a world leader in the industry, plus travel to West Yorkshire(beautiful part of the country)—but I was eager to embrace this new chapter!

The Unexpected Pivot

I enthusiastically began treating clients and enjoyed the transformative results. However, after several months, the vast amount of time required for these detailed procedures began to impact my ability to book in clients for my core beauty treatments, particularly my beloved and highly sought after Organic Facials.

Crucially, my values began to collide with my practice.

The amount of plastic required for hygiene and cross-contamination prevention was relentless. This volume of plastic waste completely contradicted my growing interest in promoting planet-conscious and eco-friendly skincare.

Despite the significant financial investment, I had to be honest with myself. It took many months of careful consideration, but removing Permanent Cosmetics from my treatment menu became necessary. Although I felt a pang of disappointment, this change of heart highlighted the facets of my business that were truly most important: eco-friendly treatments and sustainable organic products.

Finding My True Niche

This decision reaffirmed my commitment to my organic skincare niche. Since that pivot, I have focused entirely on promoting and utilising healthy, eco-friendly treatments and products, like the Éminence Organic Skincare range, which better reflects my ethos.

As the saying goes, taking the "wrong path" can often turn out to be the most helpful experience. My Permanent Cosmetics journey was the vital detour that helped me define the authentic, sustainable beauty business Karen Alexandra Beauty and Wellbeing is today!
