My Business Journey: Chapter 8: The COVID years
My Organic Facials had become the most sought-after treatment in my business. Everything felt secure—until March 23rd, 2020.
Last month, I shared how my passion for natural and organic treatments led to a fully booked diary, happy clients, and a steady income by 2020.
Then along came Covid-19.
Like many, we faced uncertainty overnight. My business had to close, and with nearly half our household income gone, we were in a difficult place. While my husband’s job remained unaffected in many ways, the wait for government support felt endless. When the self-employed grants finally arrived, they were a lifeline.
With that security, we could focus on what mattered most: our children and the future of the business. Both of our children were preparing for their GCSEs, and I discovered a new level of patience I didn’t know I had! Miraculously, their outcomes were positive - something we’re incredibly proud of.
Professionally, the lockdown became a surprising time of creativity and growth. Without the usual demands, my husband and I had real conversations about where the business was headed.
I still remember the morning my husband Paul said, over coffee:
“Why don’t I try setting up an online shop?”
And just like that, he did.
Back then, clients placed orders during treatments or via text. Suddenly, everything had to happen online. The Shop went live and quickly became a vital part of our business - what I now call the third spoke in our business wheel.
The Online Shop reached customers locally and nationwide (and internationally although that comes with its own trickiness too!), giving them round the clock access to products and advice. Little did I know at know how essential this would be just a few years later. The Online Shop now enables me to balance outstanding customer contact and service with my unusual shop opening times resulting in happy customers all round 🥰
With treatments on hold, I got thinking.
I wanted to find a way to bring a facial to my clients during COVID.
That’s how the 'At Home Facial Kit was born' - a curated selection of six skincare sachets tailored to each client’s skin type, providing three full treatments. Packaged to fit through the letterbox and delivered contact - free, they offered a moment of calm and indulgence during an otherwise stressful time.
Our first At Home Facial Kit.

I’ll never forget the weekend we delivered over 40 kits! - in the snow!
What meant the most were the stories: mothers and daughters sharing spa nights, friends connecting via Zoom, and clients allowing themselves me-time when it was needed most.
Today, the At Home Facial Kit has evolved - no longer letterbox-sized, but even more luxurious, packed with natural and organic treats. Whether it’s for self-care, a thoughtful gift, or a way to discover my product ranges it’s still one of my customer favourites.
Looking Back, Moving Forward...
The Covid years brought challenge and change, but also time to reflect, be grateful, and make memories and hair cuts to last a lifetime. We all emerged into a different world - one where we value freedom, connection, and the simple joys a little more.
My business emerged from the Covid years stronger, more flexible, and I was filled with renewed gratitude for my gorgeous clients who stood by me - ready for the next chapter.
