My Business Journey: Chapter 6: The Ultimate Juggling Act: Family, Business, and Organic Skincare in Tonbridge

Welcome back! Last month, I shared how I began building my clientele. What a joy it is to say that many of those original clients are still with me 20 years later! Client loyalty like that is the backbone of Karen Alexandra Beauty and Wellbeing.

However, running a bespoke business, especially as a parent, comes with its challenges. In the early days, every organic facial treatment was booked around my husband’s shifts and the children’s nap times. Eventually, I was able to increase my hours as Alex and Will went to school, but life was a relentless juggle: school run, work until 3pm, dinner prep, and then the evening clients.

The photo above—one of my first attempts to spread the word about my burgeoning business—captures a happy moment, but behind that very happy and genuinely happy smile was the constant mental list and the inescapable Mum guilt. I worried about playdates disrupting my clients' peace and regularly delegated homework and bedtime. Home life often felt like a military operation, all due to my dedication to my work as an organic skincare specialist in Tonbridge.

The Rewards of the Long Game

Looking back over the last two decades, the positives far outweigh the challenges. The rewards? I never missed a school play or fete. We gained the stability to improve our home and enjoy family holidays. More importantly, the children learned the value of hard work, and they built a closer bond with their Dad through his deeper involvement in their daily routine.

Now, as adults (apparently!), they appreciate the childhood we worked hard to provide and back then helped with mail dropping and now help out as extremely handy delivery drivers! My dedication to my wellbeing business taught them resilience and communication skills.

The juggle continues today—balancing shop opening hours, client appointments (and that long 6 month waitlist for my Éminence Organic Facials!), social media, and home life—but I wouldn't have it any other way. I love watching the whole family's hard work continue to bring rewards of every kind.
